JSBC: Graffiti and Crude Paintings
I just finished 3 pieces for Jefferson Street Baptist Center. JSBC was founded in 1888 and we needed some images of our founder. Many institutions feature large, high quality paintings or photos of their founders. These are often contained in ornate framing. I wanted to do this but with a twist. I wanted to combine the traditional approach (large image, painting, ornate frame) with a modern, urban spin (graffiti).
In addition, JSBC’s mission statement is “Community. Transformation. Christ.”, so I wanted to do something that fit aesthetically with the other pieces. I also love the idea that while these are the core passions of the ministry, it is not neatly tied with a bow. It’s a royal mess – just like ministry.
